Maroon5 News

Pop star Adam Levine swore off drugs early on in his career after a strange experience on prescription medication Ambien.

The Maroon 5 frontman and his bandmate James Valentine mistook the sedatives for stimulants and took them while on tour, but instead of giving them a much-needed boost, the drug knocked them out cold - while they were waiting for dinner.

He says, "We had a brief experience one time with what I guess was Ambien. James Valentine and I, we didn't really know what it was... It was the first and last time we took this drug. But we were at Denny's (diner) at some shady part of the city of whatever part of the country we were in, and we took it and we ordered the food... and we woke up at the table, what must have been an hour (later)... I was like, 'Oh no' and James had his head down, so I was like, 'Hey man, hey, we should get out of here'. We didn't eat our food, we sheepishly paid our bills and walked out and everyone's looking (at us) like, 'What's wrong with these guys?'.

"And then since then I've never done drugs."

Short Story " Journey of Love, Destination of Life"

In Indonesia, there is a famous restaurant called Nasi Padang Pelita. Many customers will have their lunch and dinner there. Mr. Rahman, 48, an owner of that restaurant, is known as a very friendly person. Many customers like him very much. Most of his customers are becoming his close friends. One of his customers is Lee, 29, a software engineer. He has a girlfriend, Aileen, 28, a teacher of secondary school. Lee and Aileen are going to marry very soon.

One rainy day, Mr. Rahman saw Aileen waiting for Lee approximately 1 hour. He is watching Aileen from far. After so long, Lee reached her. Once Aileen saw Lee, she starts to argue with him because she is waiting for him very long. Lee is trying to calm her down. But fails. She is making him pissed. And he slaps her in front of the crowd. Mr. Rahman is shocked and went nearer to stop the argument. He asks both of them to come to his office room. He orders two hot Nescafe for them and invites them to his room. Mr. Rahman asks what is the problem between both of them. It seems, there has been an argument going on between them for 1 week. Even they decided to break up. Mr. Rahman smiles and says “Love is beautiful when there is argument between couples. At the same time couples should give and take. If break up is the solution to end the arguments, we should break up with our parents, siblings and even ourselves. But we don’t because they are very important for us. If you both don’t mind can I tell you a story of a couple who have gone through love, marriage, and being very happy now.”

Story starts…….

Raj, 21, is a boy who is looking for a job. He is an orphan. He is being independent since he is 15. He cannot stay with one job for long period because of his outlook. He is a poor boy with hunchback. Many people look down upon him. Some of them will tease him. After a certain point he will cry in crowd due to many insults. He begs to his senior workers to teach him to do work. But no one appreciates his commitments.

Priya, 20, is a pretty but blind girl. She is also an orphan. After her parents passed away in an accident, her grandmother sends her to the orphanage. She begs her grandmother not to send her to the orphanage. She is worried to face new people since she cannot see anyone there. But her grandmother is more concerned about her granddaughters life after she passes away. After 20 days, her grandmother passed away.

One day, a couple with no children for 13 years came to the orphanage to adopt a child. The couple decides to adopt Priya because she is blind. The manager of the orphanage, Mrs. Laila, feels very happy to see the couple. She appreciates the couple. But Priya worries again. The couples says Priya looks very beautiful. They like her very much. They brought her to their house. Once she enters the house she can sense that there are many people in that house. She starts to worry more how to get to know everyone there. The couple calls a girl, Sarah, 32, a house maid, to make Priya feel comfortable. Sarah brings Priya to her room.

While bringing her, Sarah’s eye drop falls on Priya’s hand. Priya is shocked and asks “Sarah, are you crying?” Sarah says nothing and brings her to her room. Once reached Sarah quickly let Priya sit on her bed and locked the room. Sarah says “Priya, don’t worry. After listening to what I say to you please be calm. Priya, now you're at a wrong place. The couple who adopted you are not looking for a child. They are running prostitution in this home. I am one of the prostitutes. I worked here because I have no other jobs to take care of my mother who is not feeling well. But I cannot take it when to see you in this situation. Even though you are blind they still like you because you are beautiful. They can earn more from you. So, Priya don’t worry I will help you to escape from this house. I’m here for you, Priya.”

After listening, Priya starts to cry and thanks Sarah for her kindness. The next morning, without anyone knowing, Priya successfully escaped with the help of Sarah. Next, where she is going to go? What she is going to do? Who she is going to meet?

She slept at roadside. Suddenly it is raining, she get wets. And now she has to find another place to shield herself. She doesn’t have confidence to walk because she's scared she will fall anywhere. So she decided to crawl on the road. After certain moments, she gives up crawling to find a place for her because both her knees get injured and bleeding. She is crying in pain. At that moment she felt so depressed until she has no interest in living anymore.

Suddenly she fainted…

After a few hours, she wakes up. She feels very abnormal with her current costume. She's very sure she is no more on the road. She can feel that she is lying on the bed. She gets more nervous and starts to wonder where she is now. Then she feels someone is standing beside her. She starts to worry because she thinks that the couple who adopted her came back. She starts to cry because she knows that she cannot escape this time from them. She cries and begs “please don’t ruin my life, just kill me”.

Then the person beside her said “please don’t cry. I am not going to hurt you or put you in trouble. Actually I saw you fainted on the road just now. So I brought you to hospital. Now you are in hospital. Doctor said you are out of danger and nothing to worry. And he says you are blind. I feel so sorry for you. By the way I am Arun. May I know your name?” She replies “I am Priya. Thank you so much Mr. Arun.”

Arun says “no problem Priya. Doctor says you can be discharged today. So tell me where I can send you back home or who you want me to call of your family members to fetch you.” Priya cries again. Then she decided to share her life story to him.

After he listens to her story he feels so sad and decides to help her. Then he suggests her to stay with Nanthini, Arun’s friend. Priya agrees with his suggestion.

Day by day Priya started to adapt to her new life with them. She feels everything is new for her. Priya doesn’t feel that she is blind anymore because she is surrounded by happiness. One day Arun decided to talk personally to Nanthini at kitchen. Arun says to Nanthini that he has fallen in love. Nanthini is shocked and guessed “are you in love with Priya?” Arun is shocked and wonders how she knows. Nanthini says she is observing him since long time ago. He smiles.

The next day, Arun brings Priya to hospital for eye check-up. He decided to donate eyes for her. But Priya doesn’t know his plan. She just follows him. Even Nanthini doesn’t know this. After a few hours, Arun called Nanthini and said everything to her. Nanthini is shocked and rushes to hospital. But Arun wasn’t there. Nanthini saw Priya is in a ward. Nanthini searched for Arun.

Arun is standing near a window and looking outside. Nanthini goes near and turns him. She is shocked. They are talking almost half an hour. Then Nanthini entered the ward to visit Priya. After a few minutes Priya is conscious. Nanthini told Priya that she had undergone an eye transplant operation. Priya is shocked and wonders who donated eyes for her. In 10 minutes time the doctor is going to remove the cloth fold surrounding Priya’s eyes, she becomes very nervous to open her eyes and see this world. Suddenly Arun entered the ward and says…

Arun: Priya, welcome to this world. You are going to see this world. May god bless you Priya. Priya, in another 10 minutes time you are going to see this world. So I want to use this time to share something with you. First of all I want to say that I love you, Priya. Day by day I feel a big responsibility to take care of you in my life. I feel you were born for me. The destiny planned something for us, Priya. Even nowadays I feel like I always want to be with you. You know what, I also started to observe your cuteness daily. You look like a baby when you laugh. I realize that whether I am going to live or die everything in your hands, Priya. That is why I decided to donate my eyes for you. But, I just donated one of my eyes, Priya. Actually I don’t dare to give both my eyes to you because I cannot be alive without seeing you Priya. I want to take care of you in my life, so I decided we can survive with one eye. Don’t worry Priya, I will take care of you very well. Trust me Priya. Tell me your decision after the doctor removes the cloth surrounding your eyes Priya.

Priya smiles…
Doctor is removing the cloth. Priya is becoming more nervous to open her eyes. Priya opens her eyes. She saw a man standing full of tears just in front of her. Priya is shocked after seeing him. Arun says “Priya, I am extremely sorry. My name is actually Raj, I am a hunchback man. I have no intention to cheat you, Priya. I created a new identity because I worried that if in the future, when you get to know I am the one who admitted you in the hospital that day when you fainted on the road side, you will look down upon me. Many people outside this ward are looking down upon me. I am demotivated every day. I didn’t want you to know the truth of me but destiny had a different plan for me. I fell for you. So I decided to be true for you Priya. Extremely sorry Priya. I know you are in shocked now. And I also know that I never hid your expectation on me. But my love is still true Priya. Even I know your decision by looking at your eyes Priya. Take care Priya. Sorry to get into your life without your realization.” He started leaving the ward.

Priya ran and hugged him from the back. She said...

Priya: Raj, I also love you. How can you leave me alone in this world? I need you in my life. I do not love you because you donated your eye for me. I also fell for you because you took care of me very well when I was blind. Even when I fainted on the road side, there are many people just looking at me but only you brought me to hospital. Day by day I also realized your love towards me. Actually I am more gifted than you because I got Raj in my life. Appearances are nothing when comparing to love, Raj. People who looked down upon you are just looking at your appearances but I am looking beyond that Raj. Trust me. We are going to live together in this world.”

Raj feels very happy and hugs her. Nanthini is happy for both of them.

Mr. Rahman: that’s the ending of the story. It’s a real story that happened a few months ago. If they can be very happy living together in this world, why not both of you?

Lee and Aileen realize the deepness of love between Raj and Priya. Lee asks...

Lee: Mr. Rahman, since you say this is the real story, can we meet Raj and Priya? Where are they now?

Mr. Rahman: They are not very far from you both. The man that serves you 2 cups of Nescafe is Raj. And Priya is the one who is sitting at the payment counter there. Raj meets me and shares his life story to me. He wants to work and become somebody in his life. His main aim is to take care of Priya very well. They already married but still have no babies because they don’t want any other commitments for time being. They want to have a new own house to live in. They are working together for their future happiness. Sometimes, I feel pity on them. Even sometimes I feel envy on them, although they have physical disabilities, they can still laugh and be happy in this world. I am respecting them. May god always bless them.”

Lee and Aileen were shocked and started to feel inspired by Raj and Priya in their life.

LEUKEMIA

Leukemia

Categories: Cancer, Medicine, Science & Technology
Leukemia strikes all ages and both sexes. In 1995 approximately 20,400 people died from Leukemia. The all time five year survival rate is 38%. This rate has gone to 52% in the mid 1980′s. Approximately 25,700 cases were reported in 1995 alone(American Cancer Society-leukemia, 1995).
Leukemia is a form of cancer in the blood cells. Most forms of Leukemia occur in the white blood cells. These abnormal cells reproduce in large quantities and look and perform differently than normal cells(MedicineNet-leukemia, 1997).

Right now the causes of Leukemia are unknown. Some studies have shown that exposure to high-energy radiation increases chances of contracting leukemia. Such radiation was produced in the atomic bombing of Japan during World War II. There is also enough energy in nuclear plants so strict safety precautions are taken. Some research shows that exposure to electric magnetic fields, such as power lines and electric appliances, is a possible risk factor. More studies are needed to prove this link. Some genetic conditions, such as Down’s syndrome, are also believed to increase the risk factor. Exposure to some chemicals is also suspected to be a risk factor. By learning the causes of leukemia treatment options will become available(MedicineNet-leukemia, 1997).

There are many symptoms of leukemia. The symptoms of leukemia are the same for all the different types of leukemia. The acute types of leukemia, ALL and AML, symptoms are seen more quickly than in the chronic types of leukemia, CLL and CML, where symptoms do not necessarily appear right away. The symptoms are flu symptom, weakness, fatigue, constant infections, easily bleed and bruise, loss of weight and appetite, swollen lymph nodes, liver or spleen, paleness, bone or joint pain, excess sweating, swollen or bleeding gums, nosebleeds and other hemorrhages, and red spots called petechiae located underneath the skin. In acute Leukemia the cancerous cells may collect around the central nervous system. The results can include headaches, vomiting, confusion, loss of muscle control, or seizures. These clumps of cancer cells can collect in other various parts of the body(MedicineNet-leukemia, 1997 and American Cancer Society-leukemia, 1995).

Leukemia can be diagnosed in a number of ways. Blood work is commonly done in the laboratory. Different forms of blood work include checking the hemoglobin count, platelet count, or white blood cell count. X-rays are routinely done for treatment follow-up. Ultrasound is also used as a treatment follow-up. CT Scan is a special type of x-ray used as a detailed cross section of a specific area of the body. Bone marrow is routinely tested to examine progress of the disease. Spinal taps are also used in certain types of cancers. The spinal fluid is checked to see if cancer cells are present.

Treatment of Leukemia is very complex. Treatments are tailored to fit each patient’s needs. The treatment depends on the type of the cancer and features of the cells. It also depends on the patient’s age, symptoms, and general health. Acute Leukemia must be treated immediately. The goal of treatment is to get the cancer into remission. Many people with Leukemia may be cured. To be considered cured, you must be cancer free for at least five years. This time also varies depending on the type of cancer. The most common treatment of Leukemia is chemotherapy. Bone marrow transplants, Radiation, or biological therapy are also available options. Surgery is also occasionally used. Chemotherapy is a treatment method in which drugs are given to kill off the cancerous cells. One or more drugs may be used depending on the type of Leukemia. Anticancer drugs are usually given by IV injection. Occasionally they are given orally. Chemotherapy is given in cycles: a treatment period followed by a recovery period followed by another treatment period and this process continues for a certain amount of time. Radiation therapy is used along with chemotherapy in some occasions. Radiation uses high energy beams to kill the cancerous cells. Radiation can be applied to either one area or to the whole body. It is applied to the whole body before bone marrow transplants. Bone marrow transplants are used in certain patients. The patients bone marrow is killed by high doses of drugs and radiation. The bone marrow is then replaced by a donor’s marrow or the patient’s marrow that was remove before the high amounts of drugs and radiation. Biological therapy involves substances that affect the immune system’s response to the cancer(MedicineNet-leukemia, 1997).

In conclusion, Leukemia can be fatal, but with early diagnosis, proper treatments, and a lot of luck, it can be put into remission. With treatment options improving constantly, there may one day be a sure cure. Leukemia is a very dominant disease and very hard to treat. The key may be in the causes.
